Don’t know if you heard, but there was a fire raging in Athens for two days. It destroyed more than 2000 houses and so far claimed the lives of 81 people. There are more people missing, so that number may be higher.
People were burned to death in their homes, in their cars, in the fucking sea, even. A woman lost both her children and her husband. Twenty-six people were found huddled together. Dead. Gone.
With every story I hear about those who lost their lives, the people they loved, their beloved pets, or their homes, my heart breaks a little more. People dead. Animals dead. Nature destroyed. I’m crying, and I’m raging against the state for not having prevented this tragedy, by having an evacuation plan especially when we have fires every. Freaking. Summer.
I don’t know why I’m writing this. I just needed to get it out of my system, and the social media seems the wrong place to talk about MY sorrow, in the face of all this pain. But my heart is breaking.
